According to royal expert Richard Eden, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex may have a bigger role in the royal family's future. Their support will be crucial for Prince William when he becomes king," Eden added. Louise and James are the only children of Prince Edward and Princess Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
Eden stated that urging their children to be "working royals" would be a valuable service to their country. She hoped William would understand that a "slimmed-down" monarchy wouldn't protect the institution, but rather make it irrelevant and ultimately cease to exist. "Enhancing its strengths, Eden suggests infusing energy from youths raised with innate values of public service and duty."
Edward, 60, and Sophie, 59, were recently entrusted with leading royal duties in light of King Charles III's cancer treatment. Princess Kate Middleton is receiving "preventative chemotherapy" due to a cancer diagnosis. Royal historian Gareth Russell discussed the future of the "slimmed-down" monarchy in an exclusive interview.
Russell clarified that the royal family's actions were not entirely a mistake, but it was not their original intention. Charles, aged 75, aimed to streamline the monarchy after Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022. Russell explained, "If you use the metaphor, the monarchy is underweight. It was never meant to reach such high levels. The plan was always to have Charles III with three working siblings and two working children and their wives, as a sustainable foundation for the monarchy."
The royal family lost Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2020, and Prince Andrew's titles were stripped in 2022 due to sexual assault allegations (which he denies). The palace appears to be slimmed-down. Russell echoes Eden, stating that the monarchy can't be sustained without Lady Louise and possibly Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie taking senior royal positions. "Yes, the reduced monarchy seemed like a good idea with many working royals in the early 2000s, but now it needs reconsideration," he said.
