Kate Kaufling, a 20-year-old member of the University of Kentucky dance team, passed away on March 31 after battling osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, as confirmed by the college. After joining the team last year with twin sister Abbey, the nursing student became a bright presence on the squad. "Kate was a delightful presence to coach and be around," head coach Dawn Walters said in a statement. ‘‘Her smile lit up the room, beloved by all. We'll remember her brave battle with osteosarcoma."
She bravely fought until the end. We draw inspiration from her courageous battle. Our thoughts, prayers, and love are with the Kaufling family. Kate was an exceptional student who worked hard despite her cancer treatments, setting an inspiring example for her teammates, according to UK Executive Associate Athletics Director Sandy Bell. "Kate, deeply missed by all, marked a major health milestone in January, celebrating the end of her chemotherapy with a symbolic bell ring on Instagram."
In 2023, Kate's plans took an unexpected turn when she had to undergo intense chemotherapy treatment for seven months instead of returning to the University of Kentucky. She gratefully shared that it was finally over after seven months. "Cancer changed how I see life; cherish your loved ones." Embrace supportive friends who make you feel safe even when you're ill. Thank God for everything around me. Proud to share I'm officially done with chemotherapy and ready for a new chapter.
Kate is survived by her parents Holly and Steve Kaufling, and sister Abbey.
