Ryan Reynolds cried tears of joy as soccer team Wrexham AFC won another match and advanced to League One. Reynolds expressed his disbelief at the situation, stating that if someone had told him years ago that he would be emotionally moved by a football game in North Wales, it would be @robmcelhenney, referring to his business partner.
Reynolds shared this on Instagram following Wrexham's impressive 6-0 victory against the Forest Green Rovers on April 13th. Congrats to @wrexham_afc and my co-chairman in crime. Let's double up the town! This is our ride of a lifetime. Reynolds and Rob McElhenny bought Wrexham AFC for $2, becoming co-owners. In 2021, with a budget of 5 million, they aimed to revive the franchise. They rose from the fifth tier to League Two in the previous year. The latest promotion puts them in the third tier.
Reynolds referred to it as "Field of Dreams stuff," alluding to the 1989 baseball film. McElhenny tweeted, "No words." In April 2023, Wrexham was promoted after 15 years by defeating Boreham Wood. "Rob and I blacked out but won't forget it," Reynolds captioned a post on Instagram, showing fans storming the field after the winning goal. "I don't remember this moment at all," the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star captioned the same clip on Instagram. But we both release something simultaneously, then our joy becomes inexplicable once again.
"It's been two years of anticipation," Reynolds said, as the April 2023 match commenced. It's been happening constantly. Even when I think it can't get worse - like the Nott's game - I end up having four sleepless nights before Boreham Wood. One year later, Wrexham's win against Forest Green and promotion to League One, two tiers below the Premier League, marks the club's first back-to-back promotion in 159 years.
Wrexham's ascension to League One is chronicled in FX's docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham. The upcoming promotion is set to feature in its third Emmy-winning season. The show boosted Wales' profile and tourism. Reynolds and McElhenney received the Freedom of the Borough Award from Wrexham council in April last year. McElhenny said in his speech that football is a great unifier, connecting people from all over the world. "I'm so grateful to be part of this community."
