Less than a month after the Dance Moms reunion, former star Kelly Hyland shared that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Hyland, 53, said her first concern was her noticeable weight loss. “Others noticed my weight loss and asked for dieting tips, but I hadn't made any changes to cause it. She scheduled a mammogram in late March due to finding a lump in her breast."
"I had a clean mammogram and sonogram done eight months ago, but this new one showed a mass." After the biopsy, Hyland's mass was confirmed as cancerous, diagnosed as grade 3 invasive carcinoma. Informing her children, Brooke (26), Josh (24), and Paige (23), over the phone was extremely difficult for them, especially considering her mother's passing from cancer in 2019. Kelly shares her kids with ex-husband Randy Hyland.
"We watched my Nana battle cancer for years, so I knew we were at the start of a long road," said Brooke, who recently got engaged to Brian Thalman. "I disliked having to witness another loved one endure it." Kelly said her ex Dance Moms castmates are informed about the situation and have been very supportive, accommodating my treatment schedule and filming needs.
Kelly, Brooke, and Paige were on Dance Moms from 2011-2014 but left due to tensions with Abby Lee Miller. Kelly cohosts the "Dear Dance Mom..." podcast with Melissa Gisoni, Holly Frazier, and Jill Vertes. She also hosts the "Back to the Barre" podcast with Christi Lukasiak. Kelly, battling breast cancer, finds it difficult to accept help from others due to her independent nature. She is used to being the caretaker, not the one being cared for.
Her sister Carrie Matarazzo takes on the role of her main caretaker, along with support from her children. Paige, Brooke, and Serenity Wig Salon collaborated on a custom wig for their mom. "Having my girls and the salon with me made me feel more confident during this tough time," Kelly said.
Kelly is currently on her second out of six chemotherapy treatments, and she has been using a scalp cooling cap to prevent hair loss. Following the chemotherapy, she will undergo 11 additional treatments, radiation, and surgery. Paige praised her mother's strength, saying, "This will be a tough year, but my mom can beat cancer!"
Fans, celebrities, and Dance Moms stars sent well-wishes on Kelly's Instagram after she shared the article. Gisoni, 55, wrote, "Love you! You're incredibly strong!" Christi, 47, commented, "Love you and the kids." Always supporting you 🩷🩷."
